Description
Thousands of years ago the original Maya inhabitants appreciated the exceptional natural beauty of this stretch of coastline, naming it Sian Ka´an, or “Origin of the Sky"". Located on the Eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the State of Quintana Roo, Sian Ka´an is one of Mexico's largest protected areas, established to manage 528,148 hectares of intricately linked marine, coastal and terrestrial ecosystems. Along its roughly 120 kilometres of coastline, the property covers over 400,000 hectares of land ranging from sea level to only ten m.a.s.l. The property boasts diverse tropical forests, palm savannah, one of the most pristine wetlands in the region, lagoons, extensive mangrove stands, as well as sandy beaches and dunes. The 120,000 hectares of marine area protect a valuable part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef and seagrass beds in the shallow bays. The lush green of the forests and the many shades of blue of the lagoons and the Caribbean Sea under a wide sky offer fascinating visual impressions. After less than 25 km of a bumpy and dusty road in the middle of the jungle, you'll arrive to Paso Lagartos. Here you'll be boarding on a typical fisherman speed boat, where expert captains will be waiting for you. You’ll be taken up to the village of Punta Allen Area exploring unique places and looking for animals, such as birds and maybe crocodiles. At Punta Allen, you'll start the second part of this thrilling adventure: you'll be surfing the waves looking for dolphins, you'll be racing with the sea turtles waiting to see them coming up to breath next to your boat, you'll be snorkeling on the second longest reef in the world and you'll finally relax in a true corner of paradise, the natural pools, amazed by its colors. Lunch will be served in Typical Restaurant of Fisherman’s, where from July till February you could eat not only a tasty food … but also some super fresh lobster, just fished! (Lobster is not included). At last, your captain will take you back to Paso Lagartos and by Van finally to the entrance of the Biosphere. From here, back to the civilization of Tulum.
